Growing up I’ve had plenty of times where I've felt down or depressed. I’ve been so depressed before that I couldn't even get out of bed. I would stay in my room for long periods of time with the curtains closed. Beating Myself up. Ignoring phone calls, avoiding people.
The older i get the more manageable it got. I’ve noticed as I get older it turned into anxiety more then depression.
There is ALWAYS something to do when your feeling down. Its not always easy but worth it if you can manage to do the smallest things.
I went through a phase where I was drinking way to much, taking things I shouldn’t and doing things that I shouldn’t. During that time my probation forced me to go to counseling. At first I didn’t take it seriously but each time I went I would feel so good after. Even when talking about hard things during sessions. Looking back I'm so glad i went through everything that i did. I learned so much through counseling & Rehab.
Here are some things i like to do when I'm feeling down:
1) Write down goals & Make a to do list.
I have a separate notebook for all of my Goals & To-Do lists.
All of my goals including life goals, financial goals, health goals. Everything that needs done including bills that need paid & Grocery lists all get written down in my notepad/calendar.
2) Positive Affirmations
I was in rehab when i first learned about Positive Affirmations. At first i felt really silly looking myself in the mirror saying things like "I am beautiful" or "I am worthy of love". I couldn't do it at first and i didn't think it would help.
Finally one day when i was feeling down i decided to give it a try. I'm so glad i tried it because It worked for me & it still works.
3) Get Moving
When I'm feeling down/depressed I have to force myself to get up & get moving. Laying around feeling sorry for myself does nothing but make it worse. Get outside, go for a bike ride, swimming, walk, Meditation, Hike or do yoga.
4) Take a shower or bubble bath
This one is kind of random but it helps me. Give it a try and see if it works for you.
5) Practice saying No & Take a nap.
I’m always over extending myself. Always saying yes to everything even when I don’t want to. It wasn't until recently when i was reading a book from Rachel Hollis that i really took this into consideration. As she said in the book if you get asked to do something and the answer is not immediately hell yes Then say NO.
These are just a few things that really help me when I’m feeling depressed or anxious. 🌻 Sarah
p.s. I would love to hear from you. What works for you?
